Another function to consider when determining the type of window treatments in your home is sound absorption.  If you have large rooms with high ceilings, or just large rooms, the echos of sounds from kids and pets, or just from your own shoes when you're walking across a hardware floor can be annoying.

The solution to this problem is to use fabric; rugs, fabric upholstered furniture and lined draperies on your windows. These will cut down the sound, and warm up the room, literally and visually.

Decorating tip:  One of the easiest ways to brighten, customize and personalize a room is by adding decorative pillows. Choose fabrics that are out of the ordinary and in a variety of shapes. Add embellishments; trims, buttons, grommets, and contrast fabric are just a few of the possibilities. Photo: Rowley Company.
